I. 6:1-71 IMPLICATIONS FOR FULLY FOLLOWING JESUS
A. 6:1-21 EVENTS SURROUNDING FEEDING OF 5000
1. 6:1-13 JESUS MIRACULOUSLY FEEDS 5000 MEN
a. 6:1 After these things:Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of :Galilee, of :Tiberias.

h. 6:8-9 ANDREW'S RESPONSE

One of his :disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,

and two fishes: but what are these among so many?
i. 6:10a :Jesus said, Make the men sit down.

l. 6:11 JESUS MIRACULOUSLY MULTIPLIES LOAVES AND FISHES

:Jesus therefore took the loaves, and having given thanks,

he distributed to those sitting down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would.
m. 6:12 COMMAND TO GATHER FRAGMENTS

And when they were filled, he said to his :disciples,

Gather upthe fragments remaining over, that nothing be lost.
n. 6:13 THE AMOUNT OF FRAGMENTS GATHERED

So they gathered up, and filled from the five :barley loaves

twelve baskets of fragments, which remained over to them that had eaten.
2. 6:14-15 JESUS REFUSES TO BE A BREAD-KING
a. 6:14 CHRIST'S MESSIAHSHIP PROVED
Hoi oun ANthro-poi, iDONtes ha ePOIe-sen seMEIa, Ele-gon [HOti],
The men, therefore, seeing what signs he did, said [that],
HOU-TOS es-tin a-leTHOS ho proPHEtes [4396] ho erCHOme-nos eis ton KOSmon.
This is truly the prophet that comes into the world.
b. 6:15 JESUS WITHDRAWS ALONE
IeSOUS oun gnous HOti MELlou-sin ERches-tha kai harPAzein [726] auTON, HIna poiEso-sin ba-siLEa,
Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king,

withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.
3. 6:16-21 JESUS WALKS ON WATER
a. 6:16-17a THE DISCIPLES EMBARK FOR CAPERNAUM

And when evening came, his :disciples went down unto the sea;

b. 6:17b And it was now dark, and :Jesus had not yet come unto them.

c. 6:18 And the sea was rising witha great wind blowing.

d. 6:19 JESUS WALKING ON WATER STRIKES FEAR

When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs,

they beheld :Jesus walking on the sea,

and drawing near the boat: and they were afraid.
e. 6:20 But he said to them, It is I; be not afraid.

f. 6:21 AN IMMEDIATE ARRIVAL

They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat:

and straightway the boat was at the land where they were going.
NOTE: The feeding of the 5000 is one of the 7 key “signs” recorded by John in His Gospel. Muchteaching accompanies this sign. It also motivated some to try and force Jesus to become their Bread-King: thisHewithdrew from.
Jesus walking on water at first greatly disturbed His disciples.
The miracle of the feeding of the 5000 occasioned teaching by Jesus in the latter part of this chapter - that is the strongest and clearest of any perhaps that He gave. It occasioned the separation of the majority of His disciples, who left Him at this point. The Lord's Supper that we celebrate finds its deep roots of understanding here. J.A.W.
